National Collection of Icons at the British Museum

They are not known about because they are not seen. The question of making them avaialable to the public recurs periodically. The present proposal is to persuade the British Museum, under a Goverment Idemnity Scheme, to lend the collection to an institution willing and capable of displaying them. We have prepared a document that you can read here.

Are you the director of an institution that might consider this? Or do you know the director of an institution who could be interested? (The key part is Solution II). Please share this.

tRAVEL: pLACES REMAIN ON tHE MYSTICAL ELEMENTS IN EARLY NETHERLANDISH PAINTING, 6TH - 11TH nOVEMBER, 2023.

I am proposing a trip partly based on my doctoral thesis Pieter Bruegel and Esoteric Tradition and my love of Early Netherlandish and Flemish painting. We will travel through Flanders by coach from London.
Conventional art history tends to ignore the background of mysticism in Flemish art of the1400s. The image of the Adoration of the Lamb in Van Eyck’s Ghent altarpiece closely parallels the vision of Revelations described by Thomas à Kempis in his Soliloquy of the Soul. Flemish paintings of the Nativity are directly based on the vision of Birgitta of Sweden. The full itinerary can be seen here.

There are places available on this trip. Please contact richard@templegallery.com or Greg Godar, the director of ETR Tours, greg.godar@etrtours.com to secure a place.

Price: £2,240 (Single room supplement £370)
