Inscriptions in Greek: In the nimbus around Christ’s head are the Greek letters Ω ΟΝ (‘HO ON’): ‘I AM THAT I AM’. (Exodus 3:14). Above the nimbus IC XC the Greek letters for Iesus Christos. At the top is ΜΡ ΘΟ, Meter Theou Mother of God. By the Virgin’s right shoulder, Ι ΠΟΡΤΑΙΤΙΣΑ, Portaitissa, ‘Gate Keeper’.
