The three saints, Shamona, Guria, and Abibus are known in Russia as Samon, Gury, and Aviv. They were martyred in Edessa in the 4th century. Samon and Gury are shown as confessors and holding martyrs’ crosses. Aviv is depicted in his role as deacon. They were executed for their Christianity during the persecutions under Diocletian (284-305) or Maximian (305-311). They are considered to be protectors of families and matrimony. The icon was popularly given as a wedding present.
