MOTHER OF GOD 'HOPE OF THE LOST' (No. 187)

('Vzuiskanie Pogibshikh')

This very rare type was known in Russia in the 18th century though the origin may be older. It is related to the story of a monk damned in Hell being rescued through the intercession of the Virgin.
